September 25, 2019 – Playoff Explanation By Division

This is an FYI as I am starting to get questions about playoffs.  Everything listed below is based on the 2019 Nor Cal rules.

PLAYOFF EXPLANATION BY DIVISION:

14U: It will take two wins to qualify for the playoffs.  The top 6 teams will be in Division 1.  In the first round the #3 seed will play the #6 seed and the #4 seed will play the #5 seed.  The top two seeds will have a bye.  In D2 we expect 4 or 5 teams to qualify.

12U: The top 6 teams will be in Division 1. .  In the first round the #3 seed will play the #6 seed and the #4 seed will play the #5 seed.  The top two seeds will have a bye.  The next 8 teams will be D2.  All teams in D2 will have first round games.  If a team has 3 wins they will likely qualify for D2.  Some teams with 2 wins may also qualify for the playoffs… if we have more teams with 2 wins they playoff slots available the Nor Cal tie-breaker process will be used to determine who gets into D2 playoffs.

11U:  It will take two wins to qualify for the playoffs. Due to the number of teams in the 11U division (6) there will not be a D2 playoff. 4 teams have already qualified.  It is likely 5 teams will qualify but also possible all 6 will qualify with 2 wins.

10U: The top 6 teams will be in Division 1.

8U: The top 6 teams will be in Division 1.

6U:  ALL 6U TEAMS ARE IN THE PLAYOFFS.  Below is the breakdown of the 3 groupings for 2019 Nor Cal playoffs.  2019 Nor Cal rules specify that TO REDUCE TRAVEL FOR THE 6U LEVEL there will be THREE groups of up to 8 teams for playoffs.  Since we have 12 teams on the 6U level, there will be 3 groups (South, North and West) of 4 teams.  I want to point out that the groups are by LOCATION NOT RECORD.  Record has nothing to do with the groupings according to the rules.  The groupings are set by location with the consideration that we will not separate teams from the same city (Sacramento, Berkeley etc…) as that would only add to travel.  I am sending this out now to avoid any questions why it is coming out right before playoffs.  Standings will be adjusted in the coming weeks to reflect the three groupings.  I want to point out that while some people may say ”why not do 2 groups of 6 teams” or “have one big tournament (which is impossible as with 3 weeks of playoffs there is a maximum of 8 teams that can fit into any given playoff)” those two suggestions would VIOLATE OUR 2019 RULES and we don’t change our rules after August 1.  In addition the fact six 6U teams get to participate in the Nor Cal Championships, gain this kind of experience and more teams (three in this case) are crowed as Champions is good for the kids, how they feel about themselves, their coaches and our football program in general.
